Did you know?

The 1.5 sigma shift was developed at Motorola in the 1980’s by late quality and reliability engineer Bill Smith. Dr. Mikel Harry, a member of the technical staff at Motorola founded the Motorola Six Sigma Research Institute and further refined the methodology beyond eliminating process waste. He later founded the Six Sigma Academy to bring the value of Six Sigma to corporations.
In 1994 when Six Sigma was sold to Allied Signal, an implementation model and training material were yet to be developed. Dr. Harry enlisted the expertise of Greg Brue and 4 other SME’s to create a way to implement the methodology. DMAIC was developed and became the original success model that brought about the rigor of Six Sigma.

During a friendly game of golf, Allied Signal CEO, Larry Bossidy, encouraged his friend GE CEO, Jack Welch, to take a look at Six Sigma.

 

The original core was taught using the MAIC method. Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. The Define module was later split from Measure and added during the GE initiative making it DMAIC.

 

Greg Brue mentored and trained Jack Welch’s executive team along with the first generation black belts from GE companies: Plastics, Appliances, Lighting, GE Capital, Transportation

 

SSC Inc. and Greg Brue remain the sole copyright holder of the original MAIC training content. Regarded as the standard in the industry since the rigor of Six Sigma began, it is now available to everyone through SSC’s E6 Sigma training and implementation software.
