The 1.5 sigma shift was developed at Motorola in the 1980’s by late quality and reliability engineer Bill Smith. Dr. Mikel Harry, a member of the technical staff at Motorola founded the Motorola Six Sigma Research Institute and further refined the methodology beyond eliminating process waste. He later founded the Six Sigma Academy to bring the value of Six Sigma to corporations. |

In 1994 when Six Sigma was sold to Allied Signal, an implementation model and training material were yet to be developed. Dr. Harry enlisted the expertise of Greg Brue and 4 other SME’s to create a way to implement the methodology. DMAIC was developed and became the original success model that brought about the rigor of Six Sigma. |
